Prayer for September 23, 2021: Please pray with me. God of past, present, and future, you encounter us in time, yet you are not limited by time. Too often we want to put you in a box and control you. Our desire is really about feeling in control of our own lives. But you don’t call us to be in control. You call us to participate in the unfolding of your reign, which is out of our control. And so many look to the past – a time they think they know. A time they think they can control. What is this desire for control in our lives really about? Why is control of our life so very important to so many? Does it have to do with fear? What about making ourselves into a god? Why is control so important to humans? Loosen us from the bondage we are held in. Free us from the need and desire to be in control, to even feel like we need control. Set us free, so that we can live. Amen.

Call to Action: How important is being in control to you? Why is it important to you? Move past the simple on the surface answer. What is it about being in control, and feeling like you are in control, is important to you? How much control do you really have? Not much. Why does that strike fear in you? Today, recognize what role the desire for control plays in your life. How does it shape your relationships with people, money, your work, your entertainment, etc. Go below the surface and discover what feeling like you are in control is really about. Acknowledge it. And hand it over to God. Not that you have anything to actually hand over – if you did, you’d be in control.
