Stroll through Scripture for August 2, 2026

Based on 2 Timothy 2:8-15

2 Timothy 2 continues where the first chapter left off – encouragement for those who are suffering on behalf of the faith.  This isn’t some twisted version of persecution that we have plenty of examples of in our modern context.  These are a people who are literally suffering.  People have been jailed for practicing their faith.  

The point here is the proclamation of the Gospel.  And a quick summary of that Gospel might be summarized in three words – life, death, and resurrection.  Death doesn’t have the final say.  Jesus does. 

The beauty of this summary is that it focuses on Jesus’ action, rather than our own.  No where in this selection of the letter do we hear the author talk about having to have the correct answers.  No where is it about striving harder and earning anything either.  The focus is not on us and what we do and what we know.  It’s on Jesus.  

Verse 14 tells the reader to avoid wrangling over words.  I think of this every time there is a theological debate about what Scripture means.  So often we get caught up in the specifics that we lose sight of what Scripture is really about – God’s love for creation.  

I’m also reminded that even though there are 613 laws in the Hebrew Scripture, Jesus summarized it all down to two laws – love God and love your neighbor.  There is much beauty in this.  In think far too often we make church and faith more complicated than it needs to be.  Christianity isn’t about rules and the letter of the law.  It’s not even about morality.  It’s about life, death, and resurrection of Jesus and what that means for us.
